I have a friend who rescued a dog from an abusive situation. It took her some time and lots of love to gain "Button's" confidence. I walk with my friend almost every morning and that dog now returns the love 10 fold.
That is wonderful. My dog is a rescue, also. I only believe in rescuing pets.
