More bad news for Monsanto.....

Here is a new article on the effects of glyphosate.   An MIT researcher estimates that within 10 years, 50% of children will be autistic due to Monsanto's glyphosate.  It also correlates with the epidemic in Alzheimers, celiac disease, and other intestinal disorders. More reasons to go organic when possible.

Sorry Monsanto.

Bad news for Monsanto is great news for the world.  Organic food demand is absolutely exploding.  I see the results in my supermarket.  The organic produce section is getting so much bigger. I try to buy most things organic to support small farmers and also my own health. I will not ever buy non-organic soy, corn, peppers, greens, tomatoes, apples,  potatoes, or celery. It is wonderful to have a choice.

We get to run!

Running is a gift.  It is hard to remember sometimes that not everyone is able to run.  I must remind myself of this on these sunless freezing snow-filled days when my only runs are short ones on the treadmill.  I can't wait for spring!  However, more winter is in store again later this week.
It is hard to remain "Johnson Strong" sometimes, kiddos, but I will persevere.  My next race is the Statesman Cap 10k in Austin in April with my "Johnson Strong" family team-mates.  I know they are in training, too. Sydney and Alex train with their Middle School team, Kuldeep volunteers for their team.  She and Jason are training.  My niece, Laura, is going to run or walk it, too. If they can do it, so can I.
Keep warm and safe out there everyone.

New research on why ice doesn't help an injury

The old lore to ice an injury may very well be incorrect.  This seemed like an appropriate day to pass on this information.  It is icy out. At least a foot of snow thus far with another 24 hours of snow to follow, and single digit temps with below zero wind chills.  Who would need more ice that that?  It is a dreadmill day for sure with some snow-scooping for cross-training thrown in.

The Johnson Treatment (the LBJ way)

     Did you know
Lyndon Johnson was a physically-imposing man.  No President other than Lincoln was taller than LBJ.  At nearly 6’4” and weighing 220-230 pounds during his Presidency, LBJ towered over his aides and many of his contemporaries.  He used that physicality to administer the Johnson Treatment.  LBJ grabbed people by their lapels, squeezed their arms and legs, stamped on feet, kicked shins, and leaned on them, penetrating their personal space and becoming a part of them while hoping that they decide to just agree with him so he’ll go away.

Here is a great article on aging, and aging and running.

I must get in a good outside walk and a short run today as winter is reminding us once again of her power. It will start snowing tonight and snow through Monday....2 feet predicted for those of us living in the foothills. Snowshoveling....here I come.

Run with heart.

RUNNING MAKES YOU BIG HEARTED

"The races, the quiet solitary runs, the ridiculous rainy ones with friends. They all involved shifting a bit of blood around and getting my legs to take me one place to the next, but they had also been about so much more: the shame overcome, the courage discovered and the exhilaration reached. Running had made my heart bigger, but only now did I understand in how many ways.

It is about having the determination to try and exceed your expectations, and the strength to accept that sometimes you might not. It is having the insight to know which are the friends who will stand in the raging heat, or icy rain just to catch a glimpse of you that will lift your spirits for miles to come. It is the deepening of family bonds you never even knew you had. It is the discipline to stick to what you need to do to get where you need to go. It is the courage to leave someone you love in a warm bed, hoping that they will still love you when you return an hour later, sweating and cross. It is the stalwart belief of others who tell you that you can do it when you are certain that you can't, and the gift of telling others the very same thing when they suffer their own self doubt. It is reaching out to a total stranger who might need help whether they are suffering on the track beside you or in a hospital bed on the other side of the world. It is about defying convention, choosing who you are and taking the initiative to become that person. It is a hug from a stranger and total understanding from those you love the most.

Running makes you big hearted."

So why do you run?  For some extent, for me, ...............I like feeling strong.  I like feeling capable.  I like feeling accomplished.
      It is all on me.

I'm Back........................

I'm back from Austin where I ran a marathon last Sunday.  Considering all the evil hills, it went okay. Who knew, the Texas Hill country really is very hilly!
My results follow.  I felt fine at the half, but by mile 18 I was run/walking.
Marathons are so exciting.  There are all the bands, the funny signs, and all the cheering people. I loved it.  This is a great race.

At the expo, we got to hear Bart Yasso speak and were able to meet him afterwards.  He seems like a nice down-to-earth guy. He reminded us of how lucky we are to be able to run...there are so many others who would if only they could.
Bart Yasso with Alex and Kuldeep

Bart Yasso with Sydney and me

I had a wonderful time with family in Austin.  Sydney went to her 7th grade Valentine's Day dance.  I learned how to play Chickenfoot (dominoes). I got to see my nephew's son play in a basketball game. I watched Alex and Sydney at tennis. And we played a bit of charades.
We  went to the LBJ Presidential Library and Museum. I lived through those years and am now  anxious to read an objective biography of LBJ's political life.

Winter got in the way of training.....again.

But...............

So it will be okay if the SAG wagon hauls me off of the course this weekend.  At least I will try.  Who cares if I'm not good. I am trying something.
(definition of SAG wagon:  in a race, a vehicle that follows behind to pick up those who drop out or time out; or to carry gear)

Sending positive thoughts my way can't hurt, though.

      P.S.  I won't be blogging for a few days.

Our deepest fear

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

shared from Run The Edge

Ah warm weather.....you are such a tease.  I just get used to you and then it is time to pull out the parka, mittens, wool hat, and yaktrax.  If I didn't have a dog to walk, I would just stay indoors, drink tea, take a long hot bath and dream of spring all day today.

P.S.  2 days ago was my 4 year blogiversary/runiversary.  I started running and blogging on Febr. 2, 2011. Yay me.

If I could walk your path for you

      I really like this:

If I could walk your path for you, I would pass. For there are lessons for you along the way.
But I will want to know all you have learned.
If I could remove obstacles from your path, I would not. For there you shall find your strength.
But I will offer my hand should you stumble.
If I could change the path you are on, I would refuse. For this is the way you must go.
But I will be there when you arrive where you are going.
If I could travel with you as you go, I would surely rejoice. For I shall have been witness to your growth, your strength, your coming home.
My challenge was never to save you from your path. For this you do not ask.
But should you ask, "Walk with me"?
I shall gently take your hand and quietly say, "I can". ~G
