Dr. Michael Greger on How not to die

This is a long, educational, worthwhile video from the physician who follows all the nutritional research so we don't have to.

Loved this song and this musical.

I'll have to rent the DVD and see how the story held up over time.

It's that kind of day

It is snowing hard again; another day of being stuck indoors when I have so much to do.  Where oh where is spring?
I've seen numerous Facebook pictures of Easter Bunny snowmen that people have created.
I walked/slid 2 blocks with the dog and we were both snow creatures by our return.
We should have 3 nice days coming up starting tomorrow, then snow again by Wednesday.

*************************************************************************
Noon update, 6-8 more inches of snow so far and still snowing.  I am more than tired of this.  Instead of blowing off my long run like I did last weekend, though, when it snowed and I did marathon netflixing and coffee-drinking, I actually did a long run on the Dreadmill this morning.  Unless you've ever done that, without having a TV to entertain you, you cannot feel my pain.  But so there NIKE, I did just do it!

The community newspaper had a half-page ad warning residents about coyotes.  I guess it's not just me and my dog being affected.  Their basic advice was to try to stay away.  But I miss my parks and trails!

Just listen to me whine.....snow, wildlife....you'd think nature was here first.

Blooms surviving the snow

I was right.  There are major broken branches on the tree in front of my house.  I will check out the others when and if the snow melts and I can see them.  Another day of staying home due to snow and ice even though I have things I need to be doing.
The next big snowstorm is scheduled for Friday night into Saturday so only a short break from winter.

The real March Madness...

70 degrees and sunny yesterday....major blizzard today.  All schools closed, airport flights cancelled.  10+ inches of heavy wet snow already by 8am.  Poor visibility.  Only in Colorado, right?  And more snow predicted for Saturday.  I may have to go out and scoop this stuff if it ever stops snowing/blowing before the next storm comes in.

Now they are saying maybe 17 " of snow.  I think we've got more than that at my house already.

I need knee-high snow boots right about now.

Expecting tree branch breakage when this is all over.
It looks like we got 20" total of heavy wet snow.  I scooped out a narrow car-width path down the driveway so I can get out tomorrow, although the street hasn't been cleared yet.

Bob Dylan, 1964

I mentioned climate change in a couple of shared links a few days ago.  Bob Dylan, circa 1964, was prescient.

Here is a link to a research article in which Oxford University modeled various diets to determine their effect on health and the planet.  In their model a vegan diet could save 8 million lives by 2050, both from improved health and lessened climate change.

Some days .

Winter is having a last laugh just before spring.  We've had 4 inches of snow so far with 4 more expected.  It is only 20 degrees.  I wonder if my dog will mind skipping the walk today?  It is a stay indoors, read a book, and keep warm kind of day.  Warm weather last week was a tease.

The real story of the first woman to run the Boston Marathon

I shared an article about Katherine Switzer on Mar. 8, International Women's Day.  Here is a link to an article on the real first woman to run the Boston Marathon.

Climate change

Here are links to two articles on climate change.  The first, titled "Nature does not negotiate," is by Howard Lyman.  I met him once maybe five years ago and have read his book.  He's a very personable guy.

Roll the Dice

if you’re going to try, go all the
way.
otherwise, don’t even start.
if you’re going to try, go all the
way.
this could mean losing girlfriends,
wives, relatives, jobs and
maybe your mind.
go all the way.
it could mean not eating for 3 or 4 days.
it could mean freezing on a
park bench.
it could mean jail,
it could mean derision,
mockery,
isolation.
isolation is the gift,
all the others are a test of your
endurance, of
how much you really want to
do it.
and you’ll do it
despite rejection and the worst odds
and it will be better than
anything else
you can imagine.
if you’re going to try,
go all the way.
there is no other feeling like
that.
you will be alone with the gods
and the nights will flame with
fire.
do it, do it, do it.
do it.
all the way
all the way.
you will ride life straight to
perfect laughter, its
the only good fight
there is.

Happy International Women's Day

On April 19th, 1967, Kathrine Switzer almost didn’t finish the Boston Marathon; her journey nearly came to a dramatic halt only two miles into the race.

Kathrine Switzer: "All of sudden I heard this scraping noise behind me. And I quickly turned and just at that moment, this very very angry person was looming over me and just grabbed me by the shoulders and threw me back and screamed ‘get the hell out of my race and give me those numbers’ and began trying to rip the numbers off the front of my sweatshirt."

That person was Jock Semple, the race director of the Boston Marathon, who didn’t want a woman running in the race

But Switzer’s boyfriend Tom Miller was running as well. And the aspiring Olympic hammer thrower jumped in and with his 235 pound frame checked Jock Semple with such a force that he went flying off the road.

Kathrine Switzer: "And we were terrified because he went down like a crumpled suit of clothes and my coach said, run like hell and down the street we went."

And in four hour, and twenty minutes, Kathrine Switzer crossed the finish line and became the first woman to officially finish the Boston Marathon.

( Wow.  That was 49 years ago already and Kathy Switzer still looks fantastic.)

Here's to strong women.  May we know them.  May we be them.  May we raise them.

I am woman, hear me roar.

Bye-Bye trails. I will really miss you. Hello sidewalks.

There is a beautiful open-space county park by my house, but it is filled with coyotes last year and this.  I'm glad they put up warning signs. My dog is always leashed.  What we need is to have the coyotes leashed, too.
I thought I'd try a little of this trail today as trails are so much more scenic and easier on the body than constant running on sidewalks.  We went half a mile through the red rocks and by the reservoir on Swallow Trail (which needs to be called "Beware of Angry Nesting Canada Geese" trail.")  We turned a corner and there was a coyote standing directly next to the trail.  These coyotes are inured to hikers and have absolutely no fear of people or dogs or horses. They do not leave, at least not for a lone runner with a lone leashed dog.  The problem is that my dog wants to get them in the worst way....even more than she wants to get geese, prairie dogs, foxes, and even squirrels; and that's a lot of wanting.  I have to immediately retrace my steps dragging this 70 pound squirming pulling dog.  It ruins the run. Bye, bye trails.  I will miss you.  It will be sidewalks here on out.

If Dr. Seuss was a runner...........

Happy Birthday Doctor Seuss!

     We miss you Dr. Seuss.

********************
It's rainy, windy, and I'm Rungry.  I just want to sit in the house, and maybe eat breakfast number 3.
Even the dog changed her mind about going out. It's a good thing I'm not planning on driving anywhere as there are blown-away trash cans littering the street everywhere.  March did come in like a lion, but just waited until the 2nd day of the month.

More like every day!

A little sun on my face, some exercise with my dog, the wind in my hair, it's all good.

(Today was a hill workout day---I incorporated 7 short hills into the run---and I didn't die)
