Did you read this today?

Scientists are declaring the dawn of a new human-influenced epoch, the anthropocene, beginning about 1950.  This is scary stuff. We have profoundly, irreversibly changed the planet after 12000 years of relatively stable climate in the Holocene Epoch.

http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/the-anthropocene-epoch-scientists-declare-dawn-of-human-influenced-age/ar-AAicH9D?li=BBnb7Kz

From the article:

Evidence of the Anthropocene

Human activity has:
  • Pushed extinction rates of animals and plants far above the long-term average. The Earth is now on course to see 75% of species become extinct in the next few centuries if current trends continue.
  • Put so much plastic in our waterways and oceans that microplastic particles are now virtually ubiquitous, and plastics will likely leave identifiable fossil records for future generations to discover.
  • Doubled the nitrogen and phosphorous in our soils in the past century with our fertiliser use. This is likely to be the largest impact on the nitrogen cycle in 2.5bn years.
  • Left a permanent layer of airborne particulates in sediment and glacial ice such as black carbon from fossil fuel burning.

The Guest House

I saw this poem again today and had to share.  I've always loved Rumi's works.

The Guest House

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
As an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they're a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

Hoover Dam

So yesterday I made it to Hoover Dam on my virtual run/walk across America.  Next stop is 121 miles away at Peach Springs on my way to the Grand Canyon.

I have so much to do today, so I set the alarm for 5.  Of course, Charleigh-dog doesn't allow hitting the snooze button.  Once she's up, everyone is up. But it is Sunday, right?  So after doing a few things, at 7AM I am headed for a nap before tackling the big must-do list.
     Happy Sunday people.

This is so me.  I may end up listening to my body and just resting today.
I always do have the best of intentions, though.

I'm working on it....

It takes a long time to become young.---Pablo Picasso

(Cooler fall-like weather lately, so I may try a long run later).

(PS  Long run became medium run of 8 miles.  I was just tired.)

My Amerithon/virtual run-walk update

I arrived at Las Vegas (alas, only virtually) today. My next stop will be at Hoover Dam.

“One runs the risk of weeping a little, if one lets oneself be tamed...” ― Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

I took Charleigh-dog for an early quick walk this morning.  There were 3 foxes in the street, and of course they turned, plunked down on their butts, and stared at us.  Charleigh, if you recall, hates coyotes, foxes, and all other canines which are "other" than her.  The foxes pick up on that, note her leash, and tease her to no end. So I took a quick left turn to do a shortcut through the school yard.  Mama (Papa???) fox ran after us and followed closely at our heels for 2 blocks while Charleigh pulled her hardest to get back at it. I was tempted to just let her go, but know I'd never find her again.  It turned out to be an irritating strength-training session for me.  Charleigh is a powerful seventy-five pounds.
This reminded me of last Saturday when I ran the Georgetown-Idaho Springs half marathon.  I have a music playlist I listen to when I run races to urge me to go a little faster.  My tastes are eclectic...lots of '60s music, some 80's, some pop, one rap song, the Two Cellos, anything with a fast beat.  So (don't laugh), one song is "What does the fox say?"  Right after that song ended, a fox ran across the road directly in front of me and another runner. I was speechless and could only point. Is that a coincidence or what!

(Take a listen and you'll want to go take a little run, too)

Set some quiet goals

Did you watch the video I posted of the Iron Nun yesterday?  Here is her reaction to that Nike ad.  She is pretty awesome.

GTIS

Up at 3 AM for breakfast, walked the dog a mile at 4, out the door at 4:30 to drive up in the mountains to Idaho Springs to catch a shuttle bus to Georgetown, CO for the Georgetown Idaho Springs Half Marathon.  It starts at 8500 feet elevation and finishes at 7500 feet.   It was cold at the start with temps in the forties, but got really hot by the finish. Despite putting on sunblock at 3AM, I got a nice burn.
It was so fun.  I haven't been training, just doing some running but not following a plan or doing long runs, so it was a pleasant surprise to finish without discomfort. I took my time running, but didn't have to join the walkers, of which there are a few.
The race benefits the Clear Creek HS and Middle School Booster Club, and the volunteers at the water/gatorade stops were all cheering HS athletes. Fun.
On the shuttle ride up to Georgetown we almost hit a boat on I70 that had fallen off of someone's trailer and was in the middle lane.  I hope no one following behind us hit it and caused a pile-up.
Here is the great finishers medal they gave out.  I tried to get in close so you could see the detail of mountains and miner's pickaxes. They never used to give out medals so this is a surprise.  The winner awards are mining pans.  They are so cool, but I will never earn one.  I'm just glad to be out there and having a good time.

Race results,
      Division F65-69 place 8/10
      Overall Place 1155/1249
      Gender Place 629/728
      Finish time 2:55
Not terrific but I'll take it.

Today's race mileage pushed me over the top for my next Amerithon sticker (my virtual run/walk across the country).  I reached the Inferno in Death Valley.  Next stop:  Hoover Dam

“The problem, often not discovered until late in life, is that when you look for things in life like love, meaning, motivation, it implies they are sitting behind a tree or under a rock. The most successful people in life recognize, that in life they create their own love, they manufacture their own meaning, they generate their own motivation. For me, I am driven by two main philosophies, know more today about the world than I knew yesterday. And lessen the suffering of others. You'd be surprised how far that gets you.”
Neil deGrasse Tyson
