Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.

Desiderata:  things wanted or needed.

"Everywhere life is full of heroism"

I first discovered this poem in college.  Although written in 1927, its lessons are true today.

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs....

Maslow's Hierarchy of needs (deja vu from nursing school.)

Robert Frost:

“In all your years and all your travels,” I asked, “what do you think is the most important thing you’ve learned about life?”
He paused a moment, then with the twinkle sparkling under those brambly eyebrows he replied: “In three words, I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life. It goes on. In all the confusions of today, with all our troubles . . . with politicians and people slinging the word fear around, all of us become discouraged . . . tempted to say this is the end, the finish. But life — it goes on. It always has. It always will. Don’t forget that.

Initiative for the week, find my:

Joie de vivre = zest for life

It is difficult to find motivation in these times.  One day is just like another.  What week is this? What month?  Little mail arrives.    So this week, I will seek my joie de vivre. It is hiding in there somewhere.

Arooooo!.....there are no orphans in a wolf pack.

There are so many touching posts on the "Go Outside and Howl at 8 PM" Facebook page. People are grieving everywhere and howling for lost children, lost parents, friends and family lost to Covid. One person posted that there are no orphans in a wolf pack.

We can howl for the HS and college seniors who won't have an actual graduation ceremony this year, for all the essential workers doing their jobs, and for everyone now out of work. The support and solidarity has blown my mind. There is at least one good thing coming out of all of this....the reminder that we are all in this together, even if sheltering at home alone.

I just came in from my nightly 1 minute howl at 8PM.  It is primal, and always cheers me to hear the howls from all around.

Go outside and howl at 8pm! It's a thing. I am here. You are here. We are not alone.

Lockdown.

Lockdown Yes there is fear. Yes there is isolation. Yes there is panic buying. Yes there is sickness. Yes there is even death. But, They say that in Wuhan after so many years of noise You can hear the birds again. They say that after just a few weeks of quiet The sky is no longer thick with fumes But blue and grey and clear. They say that in the streets of Assisi People are singing to each other across the empty squares, keeping their windows open so that those who are alone may hear the sounds of family around them. They say that a hotel in the West of Ireland Is offering free meals and delivery to the housebound Today a young woman I know is busy spreading fliers with her number through the neighbourhood So that the elders may have someone to call on. Today Churches, Synagogues, Mosques and Temples are preparing to welcome and shelter the homeless, the sick, the weary All over the world people are slowing down and reflecting All over the world people are looking at their neighbours in a new way All over the world people are waking up to a new reality To how big we really are. To how little control we really have. To what really matters. To Love. So we pray and we remember that Yes there is fear. But there does not have to be hate. Yes there is isolation. But there does not have to be loneliness. Yes there is panic buying. But there does not have to be meanness. Yes there is sickness. But there does not have to be disease of the soul Yes there is even death. But there can always be a rebirth of love. Wake to the choices you make as to how to live now. Today, breathe. Listen, behind the factory noises of your panic The birds are singing again The sky is clearing, Spring is coming, And we are always encompassed by Love. Open the windows of your soul And though you may not be able to touch across the empty square, Sing. - Fr. Richard Hendrick, OFM

No one is going to happy their way out of this, and that's OK

I am a run-streaker and run every day.  Many days it is a super-slow jog of only a mile to keep the streak alive, more of a fast walk really, but it gives me purpose and a very minimum level of fitness.

More and more people are streaking due to stay-at-home restrictions.  I read an article about this today and there were a couple of good quotes I identify with. Actually I identify with the entire article....maybe you will, too....see link below.

It’s a tough time for all of us —  some much tougher than others — but running every day is the key to keeping my sanity.

“No one is going to ‘happy’ their way out of this, and that’s OK,” says Boulder-based running coach David Roche, and co-author of “The Happy Runner: Love the Process, Get Faster, Run Longer.” “We can hopefully find the daily beauty in every little thing we have to do and that we like to do, and that includes running. If we’re forced to run inside or run around back and forth in a small area near our home, there’s so much gratitude to be found in those processes. Just the act of doing it can be rich.”

I read the Covid 19 headlines in the AM, and then the updates in the PM.  Even that is too much.
