Earth Day

I remember the 1st Earth Day back in 1970.   There were small events held in Lincoln, NE where I lived then, mostly encouraging recycling. I didn't remember the scope of the occasion, but it led to the creation of the EPA:  Those were exciting times.

"On April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment in massive coast-to-coast rallies. Thousands of colleges and universities organized protests against the deterioration of the environment. Groups that had been fighting against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness, and the extinction of wildlife suddenly realized they shared common values.
Earth Day 1970 achieved a rare political alignment, enlisting support from Republicans and Democrats, rich and poor, city slickers and farmers, tycoons and labor leaders. By the end of that year, the first Earth Day had led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean AirClean Water, and Endangered Species Acts."

The following link offers science-based climate change facts, such as the fact that atmospheric CO2 levels are up 46% and continue to rise.  We can't live on CO2 people, plants do that!

The following article lists the fastest warming US cities and states.  Colorado is number 7 on the state list having warmed 2.9 degrees in the past 50 years.  Las Vegas is the number 1 city having warmed a whopping 5.76 degrees since 1970.  This article really brings home the damage already done.
